Is this her 20th or 21st birthday? Not bad for the person who has become the best Star Trek Role Model for me a 60-year-old fat white guy. Ok ok, I will clarify how the actress who took over because Michelle Forbes (Ro) decided to go into darker stuff. Let the truth be known, Ro didn’t have the rank and pull needed to make Deep Space Nine what it is, and a truly badass Bajorian freedom fighter who didn’t like the Federation taking over was a perfect fit and still is.
Perhaps ‘the journey’ of the truly Badass Bajorian started with her religious views about the profits needing to be obeyed showed that Sisco and the Federation were to take over, and she needed to obey. It moved beyond as she faced the challenges of Bajorin independence from the oppressive Cardassian shadow. It is too close to the reality of The Original Series and The Next Generation with its shadow illusion of a utopian future into the reality of the times in which we all live. This was only the beginning; we then move on to this badass transforming into the new reality where the challenges are geared to truly living. It was easier for her than for those around her. Be it those who fought with her in the resistance from Cardassian oppression. Perhaps this reached its height when she is faced with a former enemy who thought he could get Kira to fight the Klingons in some hair brained scheme. Kira’s reaction went far beyond that. Kira was now instinctively repulsed by the thought. It also could have been the height of DS9 before another war, but Kira was not the same, yet she still faced her responsibility to herself and the Federation. For that, I cite her as my role model as I tell my own tales of the Federation, Starfleet and humanity as we move into the second quarter of the 21st century.
